In 1964 Marinus Kuipers set up a workshop with a staff of four. After four months, the young company already needed to move, to a temporary 200 m2 wooden building in the middle of the village of Hengevelde. At least an additional 200 m2 was added every year until 1971.
The lifespan of the wooden building was limited. In consultation with the municipality and the province a plot of land was bought where the company remains to this day. In 1972 work began on the construction of premises with a surface of 3000 m2.
Très Chic saw steady growth until 1976. In the later years of the decade, traditional white weddings fell somewhat out of fashion. Production at Très Chic held steady. By 1979 romance and white wedding dresses were back in vogue. Production rose again. New employees were recruited, and the number of staff fluctuated between 140 and 150.
The seamstresses bent over metres-long lengths of white satin, taffeta or tulle. The fashion was for wide ruffled skirts, fitted bodices and big puffed sleeves. Lots of bows, ruching and frills. Soft jersey trouser suits and simple smooth dresses were less fashionable.
During these years Très Chic reached beyond the borders and exported its wedding dresses to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Norway.
Over a 6-day period, some 2,500 visitors attended Très Chic’s bridal fashion events, which were sold out. The company showcased 1990’s bridal fashion in style at the Assink conference centre. Around 2,500 visitors attended the shows. The tastefully decorated hall hosted shows around a Spanish theme. Models treated the public to an all-round display of bridal clothes, show performances and music.
In 1990, the company set its sights on the Spanish trend in fashion. That found expression in royal (puff) sleeves, pleats and frills, ruffled bodices, pleated skirts with or without a train, a huge variety of skirt lengths, waisted dresses and here and there a model in colour. Trouser suits were also on show. A lot of appliqué work, large bows and other trimmings set off these wedding dresses. Très Chic staged this sophisticated presentation of its 1990 collection for six nights, down to the smallest detail.
In February seamstresses put dozens of hours of work into the replica of the wedding dress worn by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands.
Straight after the wedding of Maxima to Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, four ladies set to work designing, cutting and sewing. The result was all that we hoped for. The replica contains 62 metres of fabric, 44 metres of lace and 28 metres of flower motifs. The size 38 replica was displayed in the window for a while. At the time, brides could buy this dress for between €3000 and €3500.
